UW News 2026-10-29;《Current Biology》DOI 10.1016/j.cub.2026.10.014。
Brighter winter evenings sound attractive . A new University of Washington study warns that making Daylight Saving Time permanent would also mean far darker school mornings for American children . The team estimates at least two billion extra dark trips to school each year , and it links dark mornings to higher pedestrian danger . The findings appear in Current Biology and were reported by UW News on 29 October 2026.
This past summer , the U .S . House of Representatives passed a bill that would keep Daylight Saving Time year - round . Nineteen states have already approved the change , but the measure is still stalled in the Senate . Permanent Daylight Saving Time would shift an hour of light from morning to evening from November through March . Children with fixed school start times would feel that shift most clearly .
Researchers studied 14 of those 19 states . They combined school start times , enrollment figures , and geographic coordinates , then counted how often students would travel before sunrise under permanent Daylight Saving Time versus the current switch between Daylight Saving Time and Standard Time . In Washington state alone , the change would add nearly 35 million dark school trips . Georgia showed the largest rise among the 14 states , about 71 million more trips .
A national estimate based on those patterns reached at least two billion additional dark commutes . Lead author Guadalupe Rodr íguez Ferrante notes that the national figure assumed students leave home around 8 a .m ., which is fairly late , so the true total may be higher . The hardest - hit places would include communities on the western edge of a time zone and schools that begin early . In Mississippi and Alabama , where average starts fall before 8 a .m ., dark trips would jump from about two million to more than 20 million in each state .
Safety and body clocks both matter . Traffic records suggest fatal crashes involving school-aged pedestrians are roughly twice as likely on dark mornings as after sunrise . Morning daylight also helps set the circadian clock that guides sleep , mood , and appetite . Senior author Horacio de la Iglesia argues that darker mornings would hit children unequally because they must arrive at fixed hours . Delaying school start times under permanent Daylight Saving Time , he adds , would simply push work and evening light later until society realigns with solar time — which is Standard Time by definition .
The study does not claim the bill will pass , and it does not measure every child’s actual leaving time . Still , it turns a clock debate into concrete numbers about morning darkness , safety , and school schedules .
