Google announced on 3 November 2026 that it will change how artificial intelligence works in its tools for school students . Early next year , Gemini , Gemini Notebook , Gemini in Classroom , and Google Search will be switched off for K -12 student accounts unless school leaders turn them on . The company says schools asked for more control . There is a catch , however . Schools that ban AI completely will also lose Google Search for those students .
Chris Phillips , Google’s vice president for education , said search and AI are now deeply connected . Traditional search without AI summaries will not be an option on school accounts . If a district keeps AI off , students will see a message that search is unavailable . Districts may set different rules by grade . One group could use guided learning only , while older students get fuller search with AI overviews . Any group barred from AI would still lose search .
Google is also promoting Guided Learning . In Classroom , the tool is now available worldwide for schools that already allow Gemini . It is meant to coach students through problems with step-by-step prompts instead of handing over final answers . Teachers can link activities to class materials and review transcripts . A guided version for Search will start in selected U .S . schools later this month before a wider rollout .
The change follows an August move that turned on AI features by default inside Classroom for many districts that already permitted Gemini . That upset some leaders . New York City has restricted student-facing AI through eighth grade , and Los Angeles Unified has paused generative AI on its devices for a year . Both systems rely heavily on Google products .
Supporters of the new default say administrators regain a clear on-off switch . Critics argue that tying search to AI leaves schools with a hard choice . Yvette Renteria of Common Sense Media warned that removing search can also remove practice in finding and checking sources . Former Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan said Google was using its search position to push schools toward AI . New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote that no company should decide how children are taught .
Google says it wants school leaders to choose tools that fit their classrooms , and that more details will arrive before the early -2027 switch . The announcement does not keep a search path without AI . Districts must now weigh classroom needs , homework rules , and whether students can still look up information on school accounts . The debate is less about one chatbot and more about who controls everyday learning tools .
