阅读时可留意 yet、however、so、because 如何连接现象与原因,以及 suggests、may、could 如何表示研究结论的边界。
正文 A tree that grows on a steep hill or gets pushed over by a storm often ends up with a bent trunk . Yet many trees slowly become straight again . A new study from France helps explain how they do it , and the answer looks like the way animals use muscles .
For years , scientists have known that plants can feel their own shape . This sense , called proprioception , was once thought to exist only in animals . In 2012, researchers working with INRAE , a French research institute , showed that plants have it too . However , no one knew how a plant turned this feeling into real movement .
To find out , the team had to remove the other signals that guide plant growth . Plants normally grow toward light and react to gravity . So the researchers built an unusual machine . Young poplar trees lay on a flat platform that kept turning slowly inside a ball lit equally from every side . Because the trees kept turning and the light came from everywhere , they could not tell which way was up .
First , the young trees were laid on their sides and allowed to grow . Their stems curved upward toward the sky . This happens because of a special kind of wood called tension wood . When it forms on the upper side of a stem , it pulls like a muscle and bends the stem up . After about ten days , the curved trees were moved into the machine . Over the next few weeks , their stems slowly became almost straight again .
When the scientists studied the new wood , they found something surprising . Tension wood had stopped growing on the upper side and had started to form on the opposite side . This new wood pulled in the other direction , much like two opposing muscles in an arm . Before this study , scientists believed tension wood formed only on the upper side of stems .
The research , published in the journal New Phytologist , suggests that trees use their sense of shape to decide where this wood should grow . Bruno Moulia , a research director at INRAE , described it as a real “sensorimotor loop “ working in trees .
The findings may also have practical uses . Badly timed tension wood can leave too much stress inside a tree and lower the quality of its wood . By choosing plants that sense their shape well , scientists may be able to grow straighter trees for timber . The same idea could help develop grain crops that are less likely to fall over before harvest .
