If you ask college students how they use AI , most say they use it to learn . Ask them about their classmates , however , and the picture changes . A new survey from Dartmouth College in the United States found a large gap between what students say about themselves and what they believe other students do .
The Dartmouth AI Survey asked 1,003 college students from across the US and 1,533 students at Dartmouth for their views . Students were asked about their classmates first and then about themselves . The first results were shared on October 30 at a conference marking 70 years since a summer project at Dartmouth in 1956 that started the field of artificial intelligence . The survey will be repeated every year .
The gap is easy to see in the numbers . Only 11% of US students said they used AI to find answers for problem sets , but 49% thought their peers did . Just 8% said they copied AI text with little editing , while 50% believed others did so . The answers were self -reported , however , so some students may describe their own habits more kindly than they really are .
This belief seems to have real effects . Seventy percent of the national group said take-home work has become unfair because of AI . About 39% said they felt pressure to use AI because their classmates did . Among new Dartmouth students asked before they arrived , only 14% felt this way .
Students also see both sides of the tool . Some 61% use AI to explain difficult ideas , and 52% said working back and forth with it gives better results than either they or the AI could produce alone . At the same time , 84% said using AI for writing can hurt the development of writing skills . Most also said they had mainly taught themselves , with 79% saying they learned their AI skills on their own .
Views differed more by subject than by year of study . At Dartmouth , 70% of science students said AI deepens their understanding , compared with 48% in arts and humanities . Many students expect AI skills to matter for their careers , but most at Dartmouth said AI is changing jobs in their field rather than removing them .
Bruce Sacerdote , the economist leading the research , said students want to use AI to learn but assume the people around them are cutting corners . He believes universities can respond by helping students think critically . Dartmouth is now also asking employers whether AI is changing jobs for people just starting their careers .
