阅读时可留意 suggests、seemed、may 等表达推测的词,以及 however、while、still、so 如何连接转折与因果。
正文 Many people can remember one teacher who said the right thing at the right time . A new survey from Australia suggests that such moments may matter for a long time , even shaping the jobs people do as adults .
The survey was carried out in September for the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership , a national body that supports teachers . It asked 1,005 Australians about the teachers in their lives . The results were released on October 29, one day before Australia marked World Teachers ’ Day on Friday , October 30.
Nearly one in three people , or 31 percent , said a teacher had influenced their current job or profession . The effect seemed stronger among younger adults . About half of Gen Z said a teacher had shaped their career at least somewhat , and 48 percent of Millennials named a teacher as one of the two biggest influences on their career choices . For Gen Z , 18 percent named a teacher as their biggest career influence , compared with 7 percent who named a celebrity or online influencer .
Teachers also seem to change how people feel about learning . Forty percent said a teacher had changed their feelings about a school subject , and 28 percent said a teacher had made them fall in love with one . However , the most common answer was not about knowledge . When asked about the most important thing a teacher had done for them , 44 percent said the teacher had made them feel confident in their abilities .
The writer Jaclyn Moriarty gave one example . She always loved writing stories , she said , but two English teachers read her work to the class and encouraged her to enter writing competitions . That helped her believe that something she loved could become a career .
The survey also points to a gap . Almost one in four people , 23 percent , felt that teachers ’ effect on students is not fully recognized today . While 31 percent had thanked a teacher , another 22 percent said they would still like the chance to do so . Forty-five percent could still remember a clear “lightbulb moment ” with a teacher .
These numbers come from people’s own memories , and the survey was carried out for an organization that promotes the teaching profession . So it cannot measure exactly how much teachers change careers . Still , it shows how many adults believe a teacher’s words stayed with them . This year , the institute is asking Australians to share those stories online .
