George McMaster started farming by milking eight cows in a cattle shed . Back then , he used his own eyes to spot sick animals . Today his herd near Islandmagee in Northern Ireland has grown to 300 cows , and he often watches them through his phone . As BBC News reported on 26 October , an AI camera in his milking room now does much of the looking for him .
The camera gives each cow its own ID and records a short video of it every day . Its software studies the video and flags any changes , often before people can see them . George’s son Jack , who is taking over the farm , says the camera has found cows with walking problems the family would never have noticed . Finding problems early lets them check animals before they get sick . “Happy cows make happy farmers ,” he said , because healthier cows also give more milk .
Caleb Howard keeps 90 Jersey cows in County Tyrone . They walk into a robotic milking machine whenever they want , instead of being brought in at fixed times . But such changes depend on a good internet connection , which rural areas did not always have . Ten years ago , Howard said , the phone signal there was “ rubbish “. A project called Stratum later brought high - speed broadband to places like his , and he has since opened a farm shop that takes electronic payments .
For Robert Smyth , who runs 100 dairy cows near Randalstown , the biggest change is paperwork . He used to write notes in the cattle house and again in the office . For four years , he has recorded everything at once in an app called FarmDrive . When an inspection is coming , he can quickly produce reports on medicine and feed .
The app’s developer , Gareth McDonald , comes from a farming family and studied computer science . He calls FarmDrive “Facebook for cows ”, because each animal has a profile with all its records and a photo . However , he does not believe the technology will replace people . In his view , it works like an adviser that shows farmers the right information at the right time . His team does not want “the AI making the decision for the farmer ,” he said .
Ian Marshall , a former president of the Ulster Farmers ’ Union , compares AI to the tractor linkage system that inventor Harry Ferguson developed almost a century ago . Farming has always depended on data , he said , but new tools will change how that data is used . He believes they can help farmers produce good food while meeting economic , environmental and social goals .
