In many maths classrooms , a lesson ends and the class moves on to a new topic the next day . But a large new review from England suggests that some students are being left behind before they have understood what they were taught . Its findings raise an important question : what happens to a gap in knowledge when nobody has time to fill it ?
The review was produced by the Observatory for Mathematical Education at the University of Nottingham and published on 23 October . It is based on responses from around 50,000 students , parents , teachers and curriculum leaders in 174 primary schools , 148 secondary schools and 41 sixth - form colleges . The researchers are following three groups of learners over several years to see how attitudes change with age .

One part of the study looked at Year 8, when students are about 12 or 13. They were asked whether they agreed with the statement “I understand topics before we move on .” Overall , 18 percent gave a negative answer . Among students who had done less well in maths before , however , more than a third disagreed . Among the students with the highest earlier results , only 9 percent did .
This matters because maths builds on itself . England’s current approach , called Teaching for Mastery , aims to make sure that nearly all pupils understand each topic well , so that it can support what comes next . Most Year 8 teachers , 62 percent , said they usually wait until all pupils are ready before starting a new topic . But 23 percent said they regularly move on before they think everyone is ready . The university warned that knowledge gaps “may be accumulating rather than closing ” as students go through secondary school .
The review also found differences between boys and girls that grow with age . In Year 1, girls were only slightly more likely than boys to feel worried if they could not answer maths questions quickly , 52 percent against 48 percent . By Year 8, girls were clearly more likely to report anxiety about maths , even when students with similar earlier results were compared . The researchers suggest this may help explain why fewer young women choose maths at higher levels .
These findings come from what students and teachers report , so they show feelings and habits rather than test scores . Still , they point to a practical problem . When a lesson moves on too soon , the students who most need extra time may be the ones who quietly fall further behind .
