On a night in October , a train in Exeter , England , was due to leave at 10:05 p .m . It left 16 minutes late . The reason was not bad weather on Earth , but weather in space . For many years , this story was dated to 1841. Now scientists say that date was wrong .
The story first appeared in 1871, when an unnamed writer described it in the science journal Nature . According to the report , a “very intense magnetic disturbance ” affected the electric telegraph that the railway used to check whether the line ahead was clear . Because the signals could not be trusted , the train had to wait . If the 1841 date were true , this would be the earliest known case of space weather causing trouble for human technology .
However , researchers led by Professor Jim Wild of Lancaster University noticed a serious problem . The report mentioned the railway line between Exeter and Starcross , but that line did not open until 1846, almost five years after the supposed delay . “We know it was a typo ,” said Brett Carter of RMIT University in Australia , a member of the team .
To find the real date , the team worked almost like detectives . They compared old railway timetables and newspaper reports with records of sunspots , reports of the northern lights and digital records of Earth’s magnetic field . Records from the Greenwich Observatory in London showed a strong magnetic disturbance on October 18, 1848, exactly seven years after the date in the report . Around that time , people in Britain and Europe also saw sunspots and bright northern lights . The study was published in the journal Space Weather .
The new date changes the story’s place in history . The Exeter delay is still one of the earliest clear examples of a solar storm affecting technology , but it is no longer the first . That title now belongs to telegraph problems on Britain’s Midland Railway in March 1847.
The researchers say the case also carries a modern lesson . Space weather is often treated as a new risk because we depend on satellites , phone networks and power grids . “Space weather is not a new threat but a long-standing natural hazard ,” Wild said . Today , strong solar storms can still disturb railway signals , satellite navigation and electricity systems . Mike Hapgood of RAL Space , the UK’s national space laboratory , said old records give scientists the evidence they need to understand past events and make better predictions . That matters as new space projects prepare for another cycle of solar activity in the 2030s .
