阅读时可留意 however、put another way、still 等词如何表达转折、换个说法和让步,以及 may、linked to 等词怎样限定结论的确定程度。
正文 Many teenagers take their phones to bed and keep scrolling long after the lights go out . A new study from the United States suggests that this habit may affect sleep in two different ways . One is how late teens use their phones . The other is how close to sleep they finally put them down . The research was published on October 19 in the journal JAMA Pediatrics .
Earlier studies on phones and sleep often asked young people to describe their own habits , and people do not always remember these things well . This team used a different method . The 425 teenagers , who were about 15 years old on average , were part of a large national study of brain development . They all used Android phones , and an app recorded how much they used them each evening . At the same time , they wore Fitbit devices on their wrists , which measured when they fell asleep and woke up . Together , the teens gave data for more than 7,500 nights between 2020 and 2024.
The researchers then compared each teenager’s nights with that same teenager’s usual nights . On nights when a teen used the phone after 10 p .m . more than usual , he or she fell asleep about 65 minutes later and slept about 20 minutes less . Put another way , every extra minute on the phone after 10 p .m . was linked to falling asleep almost one minute later . The pattern grew stronger as the evening went on , from 8 p .m . to midnight .
The last few minutes before sleep showed a different result . Using a phone in the final five minutes before falling asleep was linked to more time awake during the night , mostly in the first half hour after sleep began . However , this link almost disappeared when teens stopped using their phones about 20 minutes before sleep . These changes matter , since two American doctors ’ groups advise that teenagers get eight to ten hours of sleep each night .
The study has clear limits . It shows a link between phone use and sleep , not proof that phones cause the problem . A teen who already feels wide awake may simply pick up the phone more . All the teens were Android users , so the results may not apply to everyone . Still , because the information came from devices rather than from memory , it gives a clearer picture than many earlier surveys . It also suggests that the question is not only how long teens use their phones , but also when they put them away .
