Late last year , an infrared camera in northeast China filmed a wild Siberian tiger walking through the forest with five cubs behind her . It was the first record of such a large wild litter in China . According to a Xinhua report on October 18, three of the cubs have since left their mother . The footage is a small sign of a wider recovery in the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park .
Official monitoring data show that wild Siberian tigers in the park have risen from 27 in 2017 to 72, and wild Amur leopards from 42 to 115. In the late 1990s , surveys estimated that only 12 to 16 wild Siberian tigers remained in China . Hunting limits , protected areas and the repair of damaged forests helped prepare the ground . The park , which covers about 14,100 square kilometers in Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces , was formally set up in 2021.

Technology now does much of the watching . Tens of thousands of cameras are spread across the forest , and wireless signals cover more than 80 percent of the park , so footage can reach the park office within about a minute . Drones fly over remote land and look for possible fires or illegal activity . Artificial intelligence can recognize more than 30 kinds of animals and make a first guess about which tiger or leopard appears , because each big cat has its own pattern of marks . Researchers then check other features before they add the animal to its record .
For forest workers , the change is practical . Li Gang , who has worked at a forest farm in Dongning , Heilongjiang , since 2009, remembers walking into the mountains to change batteries and collect memory cards by hand . “On one occasion , I walked 17 kilometers carrying about 200 batteries and spare cameras ,” he told Xinhua .
The recovery also brings a new challenge . In parts of the park , villages and wildlife areas overlap . Cameras near homes can detect tigers , leopards , bears and wild boars when they enter risk zones , and alerts go to patrol teams and local residents . Rangers can also warn people through local chat groups .

Not everything depends on machines . Workers have removed more than 290 sections of fence along the China-Russia border to reopen routes for wildlife . Li says the cameras do not replace rangers in the field , but they help patrols go where they are needed and avoid disturbing animals . “We want to give people and wildlife room to live without disturbing one another ,” he said .
