How should schools teach science when the world is changing so fast ? On October 16, 2026, about 60 scientists , science educators and policy experts from 34 countries began a four-day school in Erice , Sicily . The InterAcademy Partnership and the International School of Science Education call the meeting A Strategy for Science Education in a Changing World . It runs through October 19 at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture .
The gathering is not a typical conference . Participants come from national academies , universities , ministries , museums and education networks across Africa , Asia , Europe , Latin America and North America . They work in four focus groups . Over several days they frame key issues , set priorities , identify collaborations and then align their proposals . On the final day , the groups plan to form thematic alliances that link academies with education networks such as France ‘s La main à la p âte and the Office for Climate Education , Mexico’s INNOVEC and Germany ‘s Siemens Stiftung .
Organizers say the challenges are global : climate change , misinformation , inequity and digital change , including the growing use of artificial intelligence in classrooms . Anna Pascucci , director of the International School of Science Education , argued that no single institution or country can answer them alone . Bruce Alberts , a former president of the U .S . National Academy of Sciences , stressed that students need to experience science the way scientists do — by asking questions and investigating the world . Learning how scientists handle evidence , debate and uncertainty , he said , is one of the most valuable lessons a school can offer . Well-prepared teachers remain central to that goal .
Italy hosts the InterAcademy Partnership’s Trieste secretariat . An Italian foreign ministry official linked science education to science diplomacy , saying shared habits of questioning , weighing evidence and sharing results openly also support cooperation between countries . The school sits under a memorandum of understanding signed last December between the Erice centre and the partnership .
The partnership already has a long record in inquiry-based science education . It has issued twelve guides with the Smithsonian Science Education Center and helped build science and technology centres in places such as Benin , Ethiopia and Ghana . It also helped create the Office for Climate Education , now a UNESCO Category 2 Centre . The Erice school aims to turn that experience into a shared framework for future work . Results will depend on what the working groups finish by October 19, but the message is clear : science education must keep pace with a changing world by teaching how to think with evidence , not only how to remember facts .
