Many people know that time outdoors can lower stress , yet most adults spend less than 10% of their day outside . On October 16, 2026, Drexel University reported new research in Building and Environment that asks a practical question : can carefully designed gardens — and even virtual ones — give some of the same restorative brain effects as more natural landscapes ?
Thirty-two adults tried five immersive 360- degree virtual reality scenes built with Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania . The scenes included a plain indoor room with almost no plants , ornamental gardens modeled on curated spaces such as an Italian Water Garden , and natural landscapes inspired by a forest walk and a meadow . Each person explored a scene for six minutes while sensors tracked the brain and body .
A forehead sensor measured blood oxygenation in the prefrontal cortex , a region linked to focused thinking . A wristband recorded heart rate and small changes in skin conductance that signal nervous system arousal . After each scene , participants also rated beauty and how restored they felt .
The ornamental gardens were the key surprise . Brain activity dropped nearly as much as it did in the natural landscapes — a pattern linked to mental restoration . At the same time , skin signals showed higher bodily arousal than in the office room . Senior author Hasan Ayaz called this mix “aroused fascination ”: a quieter mind paired with a more alert body . Lead author Kevin L . Ramirez-Chavez said the gardens were not a simple midpoint between indoor rooms and wild nature , but a distinct kind of environment .
As expected , the plain office raised activity in the medial prefrontal cortex , which is often tied to inward thought about the self when surroundings offer little to engage . Natural scenes were rated most restorative and were less taxing on the brain and nervous system than the office . The authors hope the results can guide real gardens and virtual breaks for people who work in windowless spaces and face cognitive fatigue .
The study has clear limits . Smell , airflow and temperature were not included , so findings from virtual reality may not fully match outdoor life . Future work could test attention during tasks and vary layout and complexity . Still , the message is useful for planners and designers : well-curated green spaces may calm the brain much like nature while also keeping the body engaged — a pattern worth designing for , not only copying the wild .
