正文 Do chemistry diagrams feel different for every student ? On October 14, 2026, Chemistry World reported a new Journal of Chemical Education study on how neurodivergent undergraduates reason with molecular diagrams . About 30 percent of 86 organic chemistry students at a U .S . university identified as neurodivergent . On a computer task translating between wedge and chair drawings of 40 molecules , all groups finished in similar time and with similar confidence . On average , though , neurodivergent students scored moderately lower accuracy than their peers .
Neurodiversity describes natural differences in how people process and respond to information . It includes ADHD , autism , and dyslexia . Each difference can help or hinder problem solving , depending on the task . Chemistry demands mathematical logic , spectral reading , and spatial – structural skill . Maia Popova of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro stresses that representational competence — interpreting structures , translating formats , and using them to solve problems — is foundational for later courses . Until this study , little was known about how neurodivergent students use their strengths and manage challenges in that work .
Popova and PhD student Audrey Gay ran the structural translation task , then interviewed students about eight items . Non-neurodivergent students more often kept a consistent , systematic approach that yielded high accuracy . Neurodivergent students more often relied on personal rules — for example , that a wedge always marks an axial group — or switched strategies when stuck . Those shifts more often led to confused explanations and lower accuracy . Gay notes that a higher share fell into inconsistent or unproductive reasoning profiles , yet they also reflected deeply on their thinking and developed personal accommodations .
In class , many neurodivergent students described real barriers : attention span during long lectures and visual overload on crowded slides . They built annotation systems , personal routines , and online resources to compensate . Popova argues that this hard personal work should be matched by instructor and university support . Kevin Morgan , a chemical education specialist at Queen’s University Belfast , calls the paper a positive first step . Universal design for learning , he says , means designing content and assessment so difference is allowed without treating it as a lack of capability .
The study is exploratory . The sample was modest , neurodivergence was self-reported , and the tasks focused on one kind of molecular representation . Morgan hopes future work will cover more forms of neurodiversity and larger groups . Still , the practical message is clear : inclusive chemistry teaching starts by noticing how students reason , not only whether the final answer is right . When courses reduce unnecessary barriers , more students can show what they already know how to do .
